A personal website for retired British Airways Captain and author John Garry, featuring his aviation journey and published works.
John Garry had a compelling story — from a council estate in Nottingham to the flight deck of a Boeing 747 as a British Airways captain — and a published book to match. What he lacked was any way for people who encountered him at speaking events to find him online, verify his credentials, or buy his book without going through a third-party retailer taking a significant cut.
The design challenge was capturing the personality and dry wit evident in his writing while still presenting a professional face for corporate speaking bookers, who need to see credibility before engaging a speaker for a boardroom audience.
We designed around his voice rather than a generic author template. The homepage opens with a single strong line from the book and a photograph that tells the story immediately. Navigation is minimal and the content does the work. Aviation-inspired design details are woven throughout without being heavy-handed.
The CMS lets John post new stories from his career regularly, which has built a loyal readership that keeps the site active in search. The speaking page lists past corporate clients and available topics, with an enquiry form that captures event date, audience size and budget — giving John everything he needs to respond with a tailored proposal the same day. Book sales now flow directly through the site, improving his margin per copy considerably over third-party retailer terms.
Let's discuss how we can help bring your vision to life.
