In short

Shopify web design is the design and setup of an online store on Shopify, the hosted ecommerce platform. It covers the store's theme (its look and page layouts), product and collection structure, payments, delivery and tax settings, and the apps that add extra features. The goal is a store that is easy for customers to buy from and easy for you to run.

Webgenix designs and builds Shopify stores for UK businesses from its studio in Derby, working with clients in person or remotely.

What Is Included in a Shopify Web Design Project?

Everything needed to launch a store you can confidently run yourself.

Theme Design & Build

A custom Online Store 2.0 theme designed for your brand, not a reskinned marketplace theme, with reusable sections you can rearrange without touching code.

Products & Collections

Product import, variants, metafields for specifications such as materials or dimensions, and automated collections that stay up to date as you add stock.

Payments, Delivery & Tax

Shopify Payments and other gateways, UK delivery rates and zones, VAT settings, and Shopify Markets if you sell to other countries.

App Selection

Only the apps you genuinely need for reviews, subscriptions, email or bundles, chosen for reliability and their effect on page speed.

SEO Setup

Titles and descriptions, collection page content, image alt text, product structured data and redirects from any previous store.

Training & Handover

A walkthrough of managing products, orders, discounts and theme sections, so the store isn't dependent on us for everyday changes.

Why We Build Custom Shopify Themes

Premium themes are a legitimate starting point for a DIY store. Here's why every store we build gets its own theme instead.

What Does a Shopify Store Cost to Run?

A Shopify store has two kinds of cost: the one-off build, and the ongoing costs of running it. The build is what we quote for, from £2,500. The running costs are paid directly to Shopify and other providers, so it's worth understanding them before you commit:

  • Shopify subscription: a monthly or annual plan. Higher plans add features such as more staff accounts and lower card rates. Shopify publishes current UK pricing on its website.
  • Payment processing: a percentage plus a small fixed fee per card transaction. If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top.
  • Apps: many are free or have free tiers, but subscriptions for reviews, email marketing, subscriptions or bundles add up quickly. This is the cost most often underestimated.
  • Domain and email: a domain name renews yearly. Business email (e.g. Google Workspace or Microsoft 365) is separate from Shopify.
  • Theme licence: none. A custom theme we build for you has no licence fee, unlike premium marketplace themes.

How we keep running costs down

During discovery we list every app your store would need and what each costs per month, then look for overlaps. One well-chosen app often replaces three, and a small custom theme section is sometimes cheaper over two years than a monthly app subscription. You see the expected monthly running cost before the build starts, not after launch.

Selling in a shop as well?

Shopify POS lets a physical shop and the website share one product catalogue and one stock count, so an item sold at the counter comes off the website immediately. For shops moving online, that's often the deciding reason to choose Shopify. It's common for furniture showrooms and salons selling retail products.

Why UK Businesses Choose Shopify

Shopify's appeal is that the hard, unglamorous parts of running a store are handled for you: hosting, security, uptime and a checkout that is maintained and improved by Shopify rather than by you.

  • Hosted and secure: no servers to patch, and card payments are processed through Shopify's PCI-compliant checkout
  • Shopify Payments: built-in card processing for UK merchants, including Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Shopify POS: one stock system for your shop counter and your website
  • Shopify Markets: local currencies and pricing when you start selling abroad
  • Easy day-to-day management: products, orders and discounts from a web dashboard or the mobile app

When Shopify Isn't the Best Fit

Shopify is excellent, but it isn't right for everyone, and it's better to know that before you build.

You want full ownership of the platform

Shopify is a subscription service. If owning every line of code and your hosting matters to you, WooCommerce development may suit you better.

Your pricing or ordering is unusual

Complex trade pricing, quote-based ordering or deep integration with internal systems can mean stacking several paid apps. A custom platform is sometimes simpler. Compare the options on our ecommerce web design page.

Content is your main sales channel

Shopify has a blog, but brands that publish a lot of in-depth content often find WordPress more flexible.

Moving to Shopify from WooCommerce, Wix or Squarespace

A platform move is where stores most often lose search traffic, usually because old URLs are left to break. Shopify uses fixed URL patterns (/products/, /collections/, /pages/), so almost every URL changes when you move. We handle that properly:

  • Export and import of products, variants, images and collections
  • Customer accounts and, where needed, historical orders
  • A full old-to-new URL map loaded as 301 redirects
  • Post-launch checks in Google Search Console

Our Shopify migration guide explains the process in more detail.

Shopify SEO and Speed

Shopify stores rarely start slow. They get slow as apps pile up, each adding its own scripts to every page. We keep stores fast by choosing fewer, better apps, removing leftover code from uninstalled ones, and building features into the theme when that's lighter than an app.

For search, we write collection page introductions that give Google context beyond a product grid, set titles and descriptions deliberately, and make sure product structured data reflects real price and stock. If you want ongoing help after launch, our website support services cover Shopify stores too.

Shopify Web Design FAQs

Webgenix designs and builds Shopify stores from £2,500 on a fixed-price quote. Every store gets a theme designed and built for it, and the price rises with the number of page templates, the size of the product import, custom functionality and any migration from another platform. Your Shopify subscription and any paid apps are separate, and are paid directly to Shopify and the app developers.

A premium theme is built to suit thousands of different stores, so it ships with features and code most stores never use, and it looks familiar to shoppers who have seen it elsewhere. A custom theme contains only what your store needs, so it is usually lighter and faster, and it is designed around your products and brand. If your budget is well below a custom build, setting up a premium theme yourself can be a reasonable first step, and we are happy to say so.

Most Shopify stores we build take 3 to 6 weeks from kickoff to launch. A simple store with a small catalogue can be ready in around 2 to 3 weeks, while large catalogues, custom themes and third-party integrations take longer. Having product photos and descriptions ready early is the single biggest way to shorten the timeline.

Yes. We migrate products, collections, customers and, where needed, order history, then redirect every old URL to its new Shopify address so existing Google rankings and links are preserved. Shopify uses fixed URL prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/, so a redirect map is essential rather than optional.

Yes. Shopify is designed for store owners to manage products, prices, stock, discounts and orders themselves, and Online Store 2.0 themes let you rearrange page sections without code. We build the theme so the parts you will change often are editable, and we give you a walkthrough at launch.

No. We also redesign existing Shopify stores, speed up slow ones, remove unused apps and code, and add custom sections or functionality. If your store is working but underperforming, a focused improvement project is often better value than a full rebuild.
